1 Retinol Defense

Retinol is one of the most documented ingredients for treatment of wrinkles for skin as well as for counteracting the processes that lead to them. UVA

exposure causes the formation of activator protein-1 (AP-1), which binds to retinoic acid receptors and ultimately causes an increase in the level of a class

of proteinases called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). These are naturally occurring enzymes vital for maintenance of the structural proteins of the

skin, however when the balance is disrupted, they degrade healthy collagen and elastin at an accelerated rate. The continual degradation and repair

cycle over time causes imperfections and scars, which lead to wrinkling. Retinoids counteract the increased production of MMPs and thus reduce the

unnecessary degradation of healthy matrix proteins.

2 Synergistic Antioxidant Defense

Strengthen the skin's antioxidative network to minimize direct insult from free radicals by

supplying adequate amounts of synergistic antioxidants such as Ascorbyl phosphate and

Tocopheryl acetate.

No amount of sunscreen can fully protect the skin from deleterious free radical species formed by the interaction of UV radiation with chromophores

within the skin and oxygen. The free radicals generated have an unpaired electron and are highly reactive with sensitive lipids and proteins and can cause

severe degradation. An antioxidant donates an electron to pair up with the free electron of the radical so that it is no longer a reactive species. Vitamin E

(Tocopherol, oil soluble) and Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid, water-soluble) are potent natural antioxidants that occur normally within the skin. When used in a

cosmetic formulation, however they degrade fairly rapidly over time because of their antioxidant activity. For this reason, it is desirable to use esters of

these antioxidants for long-term stability. Vitamin E Acetate and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate are excellent derivatives and can be easily reverted back to

Vitamin E and Ascorbic acid (resp) within the skin by esterase and phosphotase enzymes. Moreover, there is a synergistic effect between Vitamin E and

Vitamin C and also between Vitamin E Acetate and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate.

3 Inflammatory Process Defense

Reduce inflammatory processes with active compounds such as t-Bisabolol and D-

panthenol and normalize overall cellular responses to repair damage by using retinol.

Inflammatory responses of the skin to cellular damage inflicted by oxidative processes occur when cytokines and prostaglandins are released. Control of

the inflammatory response can be accomplished by two proven ingredients D-panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) and a-Bisabolol. Topically applied D-

panthenol is metabolized to panthothenic acid (Vitamin B5) and functions as an effective accelerator of wound healing by activation of fibroblast

proliferation. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect on UV generated erythema. a-Bisabolol is the main component of the healing herb camomile. It is

known to function as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting two enzymes 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase which are involved in the arachidonic acid

cascade and in the production of leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Research shows a-Bisabolol is highly effective at reducing UV induced erythema.
